On Reflection

Rhizome Artists Collective comprises 14 local artists who come together regularly to share ideas and experiences, for workshops, talks, critiques and events, often working experimentally and collaboratively, reflecting on our environment and the changing world around us.

Our Spring Exhibition at Manor Street Galleries, Plymouth, gave us the opportunity to showcase both individual and collaborative work.

Hanging my work at Manor Street Galleries

Collaborative work included mixed media hangings on paper, with 6 or more artists contributing to each, working over the top of each others marks. No-one came to blows!

All artists produced muslin hangings incorporating natural materials trapped between sheets of tissue paper which proved remarkably effective.

Trapped: muslin, tissue, collage and natural materials, including seaweeds

I showed monoprints with beach-combed seaweed and fishing line collected at Prussia Cove in Cornwall, using a gelli plate and water-based inks. I was thrilled with the results. I enjoy the imperfections which demand attention.

Other recent creations included mixed media work on square canvases using acrylics and inks on plastic film which were then ‘printed’ on to the canvas. Sometimes the plastic films became part of the work, especially if a plastic bag features a warning.

The fragmentation and disruption of the alien-looking, synthetic ink and paint I hope is unsettling, reminding us of the impact of pollution and climate change.

It was wonderful to have the opportunity to show my ceramics, including some sculptural pieces related to the environment and my place within it: From the Sea, From the Ground, and From the River. Many of the pots and plates were embossed and decorated with seaweeds.

Thank you to artist Andrew Downey, owner of Manor Street Galleries and adjacent Café Momus who was so welcoming, to our visitors and their encouraging feedback, and to everyone who contributed to such a wonderful show.
