environmental artist

Author: Judy Harington

Following a long career in the NHS, I rekindled my passion for art, attaining BA with distinction at Arts University Plymouth in 2019. The natural world is my inspiration: objects found on the beach, sensations, sounds and imagery. My recent work revolves around environmental issues, particularly plastics in the marine environment, hoping to raise awareness of the critical situation we find ourselves in as a result of petro-capitalism and our careless use of precious resources. I am an environmental artist, intent on reaching audiences beyond the gallery space. Emotional engagement is key to communicating the complex issues that we face in our troubled world. My work is diverse, ranging from drawing and painting to performance and video. For my Degree Show (2019) I created an installation utilising UV light to highlight the toxicity of plastic in the natural environment. Poly Mer is my alter-ego: a fish that has eaten too much plastic! She stars in the film Unnatural Tides (on Vimeo and YouTube). I collaborated with Kate Crawfurd for the Waste of Our Time community engagement project, running workshops with children and adults about plastic waste, culminating in 10 days of exhibition and performance at Leadworks Gallery in 2022. Further work has been exhibited at ACT with the Arts Climate Festival In Teignbridge June 2024 and at Plymouth Art Weekender in Oct 2024. I am a member of CAMP (Contemporary Art Membership Plymouth), Devon Artists Network, Drawn to the Valley, Plymouth Artists Alliance, A-N, Rame Peninsular Beach Care, Environment Plymouth, Surfers Against Sewage and Greenpeace. I manage the Facebook page: Plymouth Against Plastic.
